How Clean is Your Hair?

The British Science Festival is one of Europe's largest science festivals and is being held in Guildford between the 5th and 10th September 2009. There are a variety of events being held throughout the week bringing the latest in science, technology and engineering to Surrey.  The ATI's Outreach Officer, Dr Vlad Stolojan in collaboration with Hitachi High-Tech UK, ran the event 'How Clean is your Hair' at the Guildhall on the 5th and 6th September.  This was one of a variety of hands-on fun events held in Guildford town for families.  Visitors to this event were able to image their hair and look at its thickness, shape and structure using a high power scanning electron microscope.

UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop 2008

The 2008 UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop was held at the University of Surrey from the 03rd to the 09th August 2008. This workshop was devised and organised by The Clifton Scientific Trust with the University of Surrey.
The workshop involved students living and working together on cutting-edge science related projects, guided by University specialists to develop their own thinking and questioning.    Student teams worked on projects in the areas of nanotechnology; chemical and microbial fuel cells; circadian rhythms, sleep and jet lag; global monitoring by satellites; video compression; and “water for life”.

The ATI team, led by specialists in the field, explored the world of Nanotechnology. To discover what makes nanostructures so special, students looked at measurement, manipulation and possible high-tech applications such as sensors, light emitters and solar cells. The week culminated in students giving a public presentation of their work.

It is hoped that students gained not only a deeper understanding of the nature of nanotechnology, but also a valuable insight into each others’ culture and way of life.

The Workshop is supported by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, Mitsubishi Electric Europe, the Japan Society, the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills (through the DIUS-DCSF Joint International Unit), the Japan Society and Technology Agency and the EPSRC Portfolio Partnership Award.  The Workshop is also endorsed by the Embassy of Japan as a Japan-UK 150 event marking the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Britain and Japan.

The ATI Hosts

Science Leaders:  Professor Jeremy Allam, Dr Simon Henley  and Dr Richard Curry.

Facilitators: Dr Hideki Shiozawa and Mr Fumi Ohashi

Research Scientist:  Dr David Cox

The Visitors

Students from Kyoto University of Education attached Senior High School; Rikkyo School in England; Rakuhoku Prefectural Senior High School, Kyoto; Camborne Science and Community College; St Benedict's School, Bury St Edmunds; Ritsumeikan Moriyama High School, Shiga; Dartford Grammar School.

The Workshop

Students were allocated to the various projects and were sent a project summary prior to arriving on campus.

During the week students spent time getting to know each other and their surroundings, being given tours of the facilities and being given an introduction to the University and their subject of research.  Students experienced a cultural evening on Tuesday and a day at Kew Gardens on Wednesday.  Having worked on their projects during the week, Friday was spent preparing for their team public presentation on Friday afternoon.
